Make sure to stop at Latitude 28, the café on the top floor of the store. It’s not only prime for people-watching but a tasty, plant-based mecca; you’ll find Delhi’s well-heeled set tucking into excellent salads and sipping fresh juices.

It’s nearly impossible to come to India and not shop for jewellery – afterwards, you’ll be loath to buy gold-plated jewellery or sterling silver anywhere else. One of the country’s largest jewellery houses, Jaipur-born Amrapali is particularly well-regarded for tribal silver pieces. Of course, that’s not the only string to their bow; expect colourful collaborations with fashion designers, fine jewellery and a solid selection of gold-plated jewellery and semi-precious stones.

This Jaipur-based block printer is a role model for sustainable business practices and the ongoing promotion of traditional Indian textile skills. The clothes are beautifully made and easy to wear – the kaftans and sundresses particularly so – and the home collection is impressive. There are a few outposts dotted around the city, as well as a factory outlet in Nizamuddin East Market which is well worth a trip.

Kashmir Loom Company

This is the place to a shawl in India. The Kashmir Loom Company supplies all manner of power players – from Bergdorf Goodman to Hermès – with silk and cashmere, embroidered with the weaver’s initials. The store carries their own brand, as well as a select group of other talented designers. Be warned: it’s not cheap, but it’s one hell of a souvenir.

Emerging designer Gautam Sinha, a fashion graduate from Delhi,makes high-quality leather goods with remarkable attention to detail at Nappa Dori – even the door handle to the shop is made by the company. Travel and adventure are a big part of the brand and they do a particularly good job with bags, technology accessories and leather trunks, which are said to be a favourite of Sir Paul Smith.
