The first glimpse visitors get of Procida is almost always Marina Grande, a shabby yet picturesque harbour where fishermen cross paths with holidaymakers, and ferries come in to unload supplies to the island. Stroll past the pastel-painted houses, weathered by the sea, and on to Piazza della Repubblica, just up the hill, where you’ll find a mix of restaurants, boutiques and useful amenities.

The island’s 17th-century port and oldest fishing village is the most iconic spot on Procida. With enchanting pastel-hued houses and colour-coordinated washing blowing in the breeze, its steep cobbled streets are a photographer’s dream. If you’re staying on the island, go early in the morning to wander the village undisturbed. To delve deeper into the area’s history, drop in at the Casa Graziella Museum.

Chiaia is the quintessential Italian beach. You’ll find families setting up camp for the day under uniform parasols, warm, calm water and dark sand, and delightful seafood pit stop Tonino La Conchiglia, set back on the cliffs above the beach. Chiaia gets the best sun in the morning, and offers a panoramic view onto the colourful houses of Marina Corricella.

Bathed in sunshine from early afternoon onwards, this dramatic stretch of sand can be accessed via multiple woodland paths. Wherever you wind up, though, the views are the same: breathtaking. The smaller Ciracciello beach – confusingly also called Chiaiolella – is found on the other side of a dramatic rocky outcrop. Have a swim, bring a bottle of something delicious and settle in for one of the most magnificent sunsets anywhere in the region.
